This newer home may look like it has a standard gas furnace, but the heating setup is different: hot water is used to create warm air, supported by an on-demand water heater and a heat recovery ventilation system.
At first glance, this mechanical room may look like a typical new-construction HVAC setup with a gas furnace, ductwork, and a hot water tank. But the system shown here is more advanced than a standard gas-burning forced-air furnace.
The large cabinet connected to the ductwork is not necessarily burning gas inside the way a traditional furnace does. In this type of setup, hot water is used to create heat. The hot water passes through a coil inside the air handler, and the blower moves air across that hot coil to warm the home. This is often called a hydronic air handler or hydro-air heating system.
Why does this matter for homeowners?
A regular gas furnace burns gas directly inside the furnace to heat the air. A hydronic system can use a high-efficiency on-demand water heater or boiler-style water heating source to heat water first, then use that hot water for space heating.
